SAR Newsletter: A year of protecting threatened scholars worldwide

science4refugees initiative

Scholars at Risk (SAR) expanded its global work this year to protect scholars, defend academic freedom, and strengthen partnerships across a network of over 600 member institutions in 52 countries. SAR supported hundreds of at-risk scholars, launched new regional academic freedom coalitions, and worked with partners in the U.S. to counter legislative threats to universities and inquiry.

SAR also marked the start of its 25th Anniversary Campaign, Truth Matters, with nearly 100 member institutions pledging activities to support academic freedom. SAR invites additional institutions to join the campaign.

This year, SAR assisted more than 500 scholars, including arranging 164 visiting positions and 51 MSCA4Ukraine fellowships. Three scholars currently seeking hosts are highlighted: a public policy scholar from Ethiopia, a computer science scholar from Sudan, and a microbiologist from Ukraine.

Other updates include CAFA’s campaign against gender-based violence in academia, opportunities for fellowships and submissions, and upcoming events such as the 2026 European Student Advocacy Days in Austria. SAR encourages continued support to safeguard academic freedom and protect threatened scholars globally.
