How can European research remain open and collaborative while responding to growing security risks? How can research organisations adopt proportionate security measures without compromising academic freedom, scientific openness and international cooperation?
These questions will be at the centre of the European online event “Keeping European Research Open and Secure: Making Research Security Work in Practice”, organised by the EU-funded INSPIRING ERA project on Wednesday, 25 November 2026, from 14:00 to 16:00 CET.
Working with the European Commission to support the implementation of the European Research Area (ERA) Policy Agenda, INSPIRING ERA brings together stakeholders to address key challenges shaping the future of European research.
The event will explore how research security is being translated into practice across Europe, bringing together perspectives from European policymakers, national authorities, research institutions, funding organisations and experts.
Discussions will focus on practical approaches to research security, including risk assessment, institutional support and decision-making processes. Particular attention will be given to ensuring that security measures remain proportionate while safeguarding the fundamental values of research: openness, academic freedom and international collaboration.
Participants will have the opportunity to learn about current European developments and approaches adopted across different parts of the research system. A panel discussion will further address implementation challenges, emerging lessons and future needs.
The event is particularly relevant for researchers, research managers, university representatives, policymakers, funding organisations and all stakeholders interested in the future of European research and international scientific cooperation.
