IIE-SRF Program Update

New Fellowship Awards

At its 106th and 107th Selection Committee meetings, IIE-SRF awarded new fellowships to scholars from 12 countries: China, Ethiopia, Haiti, Iran, Myanmar, Palestine, Russia, Sudan, Syria, Ukraine, and Yemen. Emergency fellowships were also granted to several scholars from Afghanistan. The cohort represents a broad range of disciplines including mathematics, microbiology, and midwifery, with close to 50% of the new fellows being women.

New Video Resource

IIE-SRF released a 3-minute video titled “Why Host an IIE-SRF Fellow?”, featuring insights from host institution leaders and fellows. The video highlights the academic and institutional benefits of hosting displaced scholars, and includes remarks from Dr. Sharif Hozoori, an Afghan fellow previously hosted at Cornell University.

To date, IIE-SRF has collaborated with 522 institutions across 59 countries.

Book Publication by IIE-SRF Alumnus

Dr. Alfred Babo (Côte d'Ivoire, Smith College fellow 2012–2013) co-edited and contributed to the new book Exiled Scholars in Western Academia: Refugees or Intellectuals?. The book offers reflections on the dual role of displaced scholars as both intellectuals and refugees, exploring systemic challenges in Western academic environments.

Chapters were authored by current and former IIE-SRF fellows from Côte d'Ivoire, Ethiopia, Iran, Turkey, and Yemen, covering topics such as:

  • Integration barriers in host countries
  • Democratic engagement and knowledge production
  • Gender, identity, and academic misrecognition

The publication aims to deepen understanding of the institutional gaps that persist in supporting displaced academics and to promote more inclusive and equitable academic systems.
