INGV is seeking a Researcher/Technologist in scientific computing within the Physical and Computational Volcanology group in Pisa Department. For more information about INGV-Pisa, see www.pi.ingv.it.
The position is attached to the H2020 ChEESE project (http://www.cheese-coe.eu/) which is a Center of Excellence in Exascale scientific computing on Solid Earth. The main objective of the ChEESE project is to facilitate High Performance Computing (HPC) on a very large scale (Exascale) for earthquakes, tsunamis, landslides, and volcanoes. ChEESE is co-ordinated by the Barcelona Supercomputing Center, and INGV is one of the 12 project partners. In ChEESE, INGV is responsible, among other tasks, for the High-Resolution Volcanic Plume Simulation Demonstrator (PD3) and Probabilistic Volcanic Hazard Assessment (PD6).
The candidate will be responsible for the HPC profiling, optimization and enabling on the most advanced European HPC platforms, of the ASHEE code, a CFD tool for the simulation of explosive volcanic eruptions based on the OpenFOAM® computational infrastructure. He/she will work in collaboration with HPC experts in three of the European Tier0 HPC centres (CINECA - Italy, BSC - Spain, HLRS - Germany) in code development and deployment and with INGV experts in Physical Volcanology and Computational Fluid Dynamics.
The aim of the Task is to perform a Pilot Demonstrator for Exascale or pre-Exascale performance of the code in high-resolution numerical simulations of volcanic plumes. Management of HPC workflows (production, pre and post-processing, data storage, analysis and visualization) will be required, and interaction with other ChEESE tasks, including those aimed at integration with 3D atmospheric ash dispersal model and probabilistic hazard assessment, in collaboration with Italian and Icelandic Civil Protection authorities.
The duration of the employment is 24 months.
Salary will be about 55 k€/year, including taxes and social benefits as for Italian employees.

The candidate must have a MSc, or other corresponding education equivalent to a Italian MSc the following fields: physics, geophysics, mathematics, computer sciences, information technology, engineering.
A PhD or three years Research Experience are required.
Solid skills in C++ programming and Python scripting, good command of Linux, and experience with Scientific High Performance Computing are prerequisites.
Experience in one or more of the following topics will be positively valued:
- Doctoral degree in fields related to the proposed activity
- Previous experience in Computational Fluid Dynamics / OpenFOAM
