2. About ECMWF

ECMWF has been entrusted to operate the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) and the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) on behalf of the European Commission until 2021. Copernicus is the European Union (EU) flagship Earth-observation programme. The Copernicus programme ensures operational monitoring of the atmosphere, oceans, and continental surfaces, and provides reliable, validated information services for a range of environmental and security applications. Based on the exploitation of space based and in situ observations and models, Copernicus provides information services for land, marine, atmospheric and climate monitoring, as well as emergency management and security. The Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) service provides consistent and qualitycontrolled information related to air pollution and health, solar energy, greenhouse gases and climate forcing, everywhere in the world. For details, see atmosphere.copernicus.eu/.

3. Summary of the role
The post-holder will work in the CAMS Development Section contributing to the further development of the CAMS global data assimilation and forecasting system and the Global Fire Assimilation System (GFAS). The successful candidate will work as part of a team to monitor and improve the impact of current satellite instruments and to implement and evaluate the use of new instruments.
4. Main duties and key responsibilities
The post-holder will contribute to the development of the data assimilation aspects in the CAMS global assimilation and forecasting system as well as the further development of the Global Fire Assimilation System (GFAS). The CAMS global forecasting system consists of specific schemes for representing processes related to aerosol, chemical species and greenhouse gases in ECMWF’s Integrated Forecasting System (IFS). The post-holder will work with internal ECMWF staff and externally contracted experts to improve the data assimilation code as well as introduce new observational data streams, such as for the Sentinels and other satellite missions. This also includes exploring the use of observations for additional atmospheric species to better constrain the forecasting system. In a similar way, the Scientist will work to improve the data assimilation code as well as introduce new observational data streams in the GFAS system.
- Maintaining and further improving the data assimilation aspects of atmospheric composition in IFS
- Introducing new observational data streams in the CAMS global data assimilation and forecasting system
- Maintaining and further improving the Global Fire Assimilation System (GFAS)
- Overseeing the work carried out in their area of expertise by external contractors for the execution of CAMS activities
- Integrating and testing mature system developments prepared by external contractors into IFS and GFAS
- Monitoring the performance of the operational GFAS system and troubleshooting when necessary in collaboration with the CAMS global production team
- Assisting with technical tasks needed for running atmospheric composition in the IFS
- Assisting the CAMS user support for responding to specialised user queries

6. Qualifications and experience required
A university degree, or equivalent, in a discipline related to meteorology, physics, mathematics or geosciences is required.
A PhD in a related subject is desirable but not essential.
Experience with developing and maintaining large scientific codes.
Experience with atmospheric data assimilation is desirable.
Experience with developing codes on high-performance computing facilities is desirable.
Experience working in projects and teams governed by tight schedules would be advantageous.
Knowledge, Skills and Language
Good knowledge of at least one high-level programming language such as C++ or Fortran.
Ability to work in a Linux-based environment.
A good knowledge of Python would be advantageous.
Candidates must be able to work effectively in English and interviews will be conducted in English.
A good knowledge of one of the Centre’s other working languages (French or German) would be an advantage.
7. Other information
The successful candidate will be recruited at the A2 grade, according to the scales of the Coordinated Organisations and the annual basic salary will be £59,228.40 net of tax. This position is assigned to the employment category STF-PL as defined in the Staff Regulations.

Starting date: As soon as possible.
Length of contract: Contract to 30 September 2021, with possibility of renewal depending on the next phase of the Copernicus programme (2021-2027).
