The Department of Philosophy at the University of Greifswald’s Faculty of Arts and Humanities is seeking to fill the position of a

W2 Professor of Philosophy with a Focus on Aesthetics and the Philosophy of Culture

by the 1 April 2020.

The future holder of the position is expected to use a systematic approach for teaching and researching aspects of philosophy, in particular aesthetics and the philosophy of culture. The teaching shall cover a broad range of the central problems, perspectives and models of aesthetics and the philosophy of culture, which will be addressed in both systematic and historical detail. This includes an active contribution to all of the degree courses provided by the Department of Philosophy, as well as classes taught for other degree courses (especially in fine arts and the history of art), and cross-disciplinary collaborations.

The successful candidate requires a research profile in the field of philosophy that covers general aesthetics, focussing in particular on epistemology or the philosophy of perception; and should be a recognised expert as documented by publications in the core areas of the philosophy of culture and the philosophical reflection on cultural studies.

The application documents should be accompanied by a concept for future collaboration within the Department of Philosophy and with other disciplines belonging to the arts and humanities in Greifswald. The position holder will be expected to play an active role in the development and consolidation of interdisciplinary research initiatives and have experience in the raising of external funding. Experience of academic self-government and periods of stay abroad are desirable, but not essential. The position holder must be willing to teach in English.

Applicants must fulfil the requirements for a university professor according to Section 58 of the Landeshochschulgesetz (State Higher Education Law) of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern: a successfully completed university degree, doctorate, independent teaching and research experience as proven by a junior professorship, habilitation or other equivalent academic achievements. In accordance with § 61 LHG M-V, the professor appointed will be assigned the status of a civil servant (Beamtenverhältnis) with unlimited tenure; alternatively, if the applicant is not permanently available: limited tenure as a civil servant or public service employee.

This advertisement is open to all applicants, irrespective of gender. The University would like to increase the proportion of women in areas in which they are underrepresented. Therefore applications from women are particularly welcome and will be treated with priority if they have the same qualifications and as long as there are no clear reasons which make a fellow applicant more suitable. Severely disabled applicants with the same professional and personal qualifications will also be given preference.

Unfortunately, the application costs will not be reimbursed by the State of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

For more information, please contact the Head of the Department of Philosophy Prof. Dr. Micha Werner, Tel.: +49 3834 420 3450.

Applications with all usual documents (Curriculum Vitae (CV) reflecting the academic career, list of scholarly publications, courses taught and research projects, academic certificates) should be sent by the 1 June 2019 in electronic form (motivation letter and corresponding attachments in one PDF document) to:
